English Bluebells

It will soon be time to sow some more bluebell seeds in my garden. These can be sown directly into the ground in autumn or into seed trays. You will need to be patient though, as it takes at least five years for the seeds to grow into bulbs and flower.
Did you know that there is a difference between English and Spanish Bluebells and there are three main ways to tell them apart?
  • Native bluebells have a strong, sweet scent, whereas Spanish bluebells have no scent.
  • English bluebells are a vivid blue-violet colour while the Spanish variety is much paler.
  • The strongly curved outer parts of the flower of native bluebells contrasts with the gentle bell shape of the Spanish bluebell.
See if you can spot the difference next spring when the bluebells are on bloom.

Daisy finds out in Chapter Thirty-Seven of 'Bluebell Lodge' how bluebells were important in Medieval times. Do you know why?
